Tesla Shocks the Motoring World with Surprise Unveil of Second-Gen Roadster, the World’s Fastest Production Car

Tesla’s vision of an American commerce stocked by an armada of EVs has been getting a lot of press this week, and that’s only fair. Trucking has become the mainstay of delivery of goods in the United States; an energy-independent fleet delivering day-to-day essentials is a case of better late than never, and Tesla’s doing its best to usher in the new age. Company CEO Elon Musk held a special Rig Gig to unveil the company’s workhorses, and outline a vision of the near future. The Tesla semis will be petroleum-crisis proof, cheaper to run, and they’ll produce zero emissions.

Now that we’ve acknowledged the utilitarian transportation news from Electric Muskyland, though, let’s have a look at what Elon is doing for the hell-bent-for-leather driver with a fat wallet, because that turned out to be the icing on the cake for attendees at the Tesla Semi unveiling. The Tesla Roadster—the speedster in question—rolled out of a semi flatbed at the end of the event, a surprising bit of spice to spark the daydreams of recreational drivers; the Roadster had not been announced as part of the exposition. And so, Musk managed to humiliate the entire supercar space once again, and he did so with a straight face.

According to Musk, the little rocket hits 60 in under two seconds and flags a quarter mile in 8.9, making it the quickest production car in the world. The 1.9-second 0-60 time is a borderline frightening number, bringing an unheard of amount of frisson to the act of stomping on the accelerator, and possibly a touch of whiplash to the unprepared. But the car’s design is as striking, with a wedge sensibility, a targa top that sneaks away into the back of the car, and very unpretentious lines. Similarly, its impressive top speed of 250 MPH is slightly overshadowed by its revolutionary range: 620 miles is forecast by the time it becomes available in 2020.

The new Tesla Roadster starts at $200,000.
