Now ex-couple Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt have apparently decided that renting is the way to deal with their collectively owned penthouse apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side; the place is currently available at $15K/month.
The duo purchased the property in 2013, paying a little less than $2.5 million for the unit in the Rosario Candela designed building, and embarking on a long and involved journey of restoration which left the residence dramatically altered for the better.
Most apparent in a then-and-now comparison of the place is the fact that it has opened up the living and dining spaces and kitchen. The step-up living room to dining room transition is now broadly invitational, allowing the whole apartment to relax. The kitchen benefits most from this feeling of ease; it’s remarkably tasteful and unassuming, and should bring out the inner Julia Child in anyone.
The central motif of the renovation? The Tudor arch. An interesting choice, but outside the other more heavy-handed trappings of Tudor Revival interiors, it sets a very subtle tone of grace and fluidity. In the pre-revision apartment, it was used to define the fireplace. The renovation expands it to a motif, and employs it to embellish the dining/living threshold, the kitchen and dining room divider, as well as the hallway; as a continual stylistic reference it really enhances other charming details, such as the pocket doors with etched glass panels, and balances out more modern expressions, like the steel-framed windows and skylights.
The unit extends to about 1,000 square feet, and is a two-and-two. The terrace is a lovely little niche that offers intimate views of the not-so-distant city.
Hamm’s turn as resident hood Buddy in ‘Baby Driver’ was one of three major big-screen roles for the actor in 2017; 2018 will see him in ‘Beirut,’ a political thriller helmed by ‘Session 9’ director Brad Anderson.
Hamm and Westfeldt, a noted theater actress, launched a production company, Points West Pictures, in 2009.
