Filmmaker Mira Nair has listed a condo in Manhattan that she’s owned for the better part of a decade; Nair is asking $1.85 million for the West Chelsea condo. An investment property for Ms. Nair, the condo has generally been a rental since she purchased it in 2008, for $1.375 million.
The condo is located in the Loft 25 building. Loft 25 dates to the pre-war years (it looks late-1930’s), and was originally used as a printing factory. It was repurposed and transformed into a condominium in the early 2000’s by the creative souls at TRA Studio. The result draws its identity from the building’s history in a uniquely oblique manner.
Nair’s unit extends to roughly 1,000 square feet, and contains two bedrooms and two baths. 12’ ceilings give the residence a nice sense of proportion, and the glass and whitewash give the spaces an overall sense of optimism. A lack of sledgehammer luxe helps sustain this atmosphere, as there is no feeling of creative limitation from textural or materialistic overload.
Most impressive is the galley kitchen, a modern-inspired blend of custom cabinetry, molded green-and-white barstools with stainless bases, and grey countertops that injects a little whimsy into kitchen functionality. The master bath features an Eastern-inspired minimalist design, and a nicely balanced mix of teak, stone, and tile.
Nair’s directed 1988’s heartbreaking ‘Salaam Bombay!’ More recently, she directed last year’s ‘Queen of Katwe’.
