In-Frame Motor Helps BMW’s Active Hybrid E-Bike Keep a Low Profile

BMW has introduced its new Active Hybrid E-Bike.

The sleek new bike hides its electric motor inside the frame, giving it a sportier and more modern look. The E-Bike boasts a number of expected features, including pedal-assist that can be switched on/off with the touch of a button, and four power modes that sweep between additional juice and efficiency. But it’s the design and visual appeal of the bike that’ll sell it.

BMW isn’t the first company to place the motor inside the frame, but it is one of the few to do so in such an organic way, giving the vehicle a very linear appearance. Many new E-Bikes end up with a clunky, DIY look, but this one conceals its 504-Wh battery and 240-W motor inside the hydroformed aluminum frame. When paired with mudguards, a rear integrated LED light, and an eZone saddle, the result is a striking electric bike that stands out in the crowd as a super-streamlined flyer.

The BMW Active Hybrid is available for $4,000 at a number of select BMW dealers.
