McLaren Special Operations Dials up Two Different R Builds for One Lucky Customer

This year, a collector and driving enthusiast commissioned two custom R builds from McLaren’s Special Operations division. The MSO division builds dream cars and personalized statements, and is many times tasked with cosmetic special orders. In the case of one particular recent customer special order, however, they got a chance to flex their design muscles a bit more, and dig a little deeper into McLaren potential.

The cars are based on the 650S: one spider for fair weather, and one coupe for cool. They are shrouded in two-tone gossamer silver and charcoal, and fringed with a generous dose of carbon fiber that adds another shade to the overall scheme, but the coupe gets a satin finish, while the spider gets gloss. The coupe’s design features a roof intake.

Both cars are powered by the same engine, McLaren’s 3.8L bi-turbo V8, tuned to 679 horsepower. The cars received hand polished cylinder heads; the McLaren Special Operations division’s craftspeople obviously take an absolutely meticulous approach to engine construction, and the time spent hand assembling is as considerable as the razor’s-edge acuity of the end result. Both cars are also outfitted with special exhausts, and titanium end pipes.

The cabins of both cars are done up in the same red and black color combination. Alcantara is used for the upholstery, with red accent stitching that reprises the pinstripes on the cars. Instrument displays are IRIS, for better daytime visuals.

McLaren did not reveal the price of the matched set; according to Special Operations, that’s need-to-know basis information only.
