After much anticipation, Volvo has finally unveiled its newest crossover, the XC40, and its design language surprises: it looks substantially more aggressive than the contemporary Volvo expression we’ve come to expect, and favors the SUV component of the crossover equation.
The new vehicle is a striking design departure for modern Volvos, conjuring both fluidity and old-fashioned ’40 series utilitarian boxiness. The exterior build gives way to a sporty but stylish interior. In addition, drivers will be able to select from a number of drivetrain variations, including two gasoline and, eventually, hybrid and full-electric versions.
Volvo’s new crossover is available in a number of exterior and interior colors totaling 17 unique color options for body and roof finishes. In addition, LED running lights and a very compact build add to the vehicle’s sporty aesthetic.
Some of the best features of the new crossover come by way of upgraded safety, a Volvo perennial. For example, each XC40 comes equipped with City Safety, which uses automatic braking to avoid accidents. There’s also built-in Cross Traffic alert, Run-off Road protection, Pilot Assist, and a 360-degree camera.
Pricing for Volvo’s all-wheel-drive XC40 begins at $35,300. The front-wheel-drive version will be available next year with a base price at $33,200.
