Jaguar may be one of a number of luxury automakers to introduce a new production-level electric vehicle, but it’s the first to introduce a production series of EV race cars.
The carmaker plans to launch its new five-seat electric sports car next year, when the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY series will debut in major cities across the world. Based on Jaguar’s I-PACE concept, the new performance car should help the company with public exposure to its very attractive and ecologically relevant street-legal automobiles, while proving that eco-consciousness and hair-raising performance levels need not be mutually exclusive.
“With the launch of the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY, we have strengthened our commitment to battery electric vehicles, international motorsport and Formula E,” said the chairman of Jaguar Racing, Gerd Mauser.
Since Jaguar’s special race series vehicle is based on the concept I-PACE, the new race series will pack some substantial power. The I-PACE concept that debuted at the Los Angeles auto show last year boasted a 220-mile range thanks to a 90-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. That’s a fairly dazzling figure, and it poises JLR to take point on long-range luxury EV options that incorporate the lovely lines and luxury accoutrements with which a Jag is associated.
Jaguar has not only seen the writing on the wall, it has comprehended it: the brand recently revealed that it will offer all new models as electric options starting in 2020.
Pricing for the I-PACE eTROPHY has yet to be revealed.
