Aficionados of high-end BMW performance may take heart: the luxury automaker has announced that it’s bringing back its 8 Series.

BMW unveiled the new M8 GTE at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, and declared the M8 officially on the way. The new models will replace the 6 Series coupe on and off the track.

The M8 GTE is designed to compete with the Aston Martin DB11 and Ferrari Portofino, and boasts an ultra-light carbon-fiber build with a large rear wing to improve aerodynamic downforce. It gets its power from a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that makes 500 horsepower, directed to a six-speed sequential transmission. A limited-slip differential, a carbon-fiber driveshaft, and a carbon-fiber clutch add to the vehicle’s impressive performance capabilities.

The production M8 is expected to debut in 2019. It will feature a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that produces 600 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. While details aren’t verified, the production M8 will most likely utilize an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The M8 production model a smart move by the automaker: dropping the upper-mid 6 Series, and focusing on an entry that represents an all-out commitment from buyers for whom money is not an object.

BMW plans to return to Le Mans with the M8 GTE. The 2018 competition will mark the first BMW factory-backed car at Le Mans in seven years.
