Via Instagram, Madonna recently announced that she now lives in Portugal. Having fallen in love with the country during a tour, she has made the commitment a few weeks ago to an extended stay with the purchase of a $9 million estate in Sintra, a picturesque village north of Lisbon.
Never one to settle for the conventional, the new home Madonna selected for herself and her soccer-playing son is this Moorish revival country estate on the Portuguese coast. The property—known as Quinta do Relógio—dates to 1860, and was originally owned by a Count. And now it passes on to the Queen of Pop.
The living spaces have been a renovation-in-progress, apparently for many years. The total interior living area on the property measures about 21,800 square feet, with the main house measuring 16,000, and the detached villa and caretaker’s cottage measuring 4,700 and 1,100 square feet, respectively. At present, the villa represents the only fully renovated living space, and contains four bedrooms and seven baths.
Currently habitable spaces are breathtaking. Bright, with arches and rounded corners giving the interiors a beguilingly feminine charm, the villa’s spaces feature 15’ ceilings, inlaid plank floors, stained glass, French windows, abundant moldings and carved stone, and a spectacular skylight illuminating the staircase.
The grounds of Quinta do Relógio measure 5.7 acres, and incorporate a clock tower, a lake, numerous patios and terraces, gardens designed in the romantic style, and marvelous views of the surrounding countryside, nearby Sintra, and the ocean.
Madonna’s move to Portugal is, according to the performer, mainly for the benefit of her son, whose talent as a soccer player has secured him a spot in the junior squad of the club Benfica, based in nearby Lisbon.
