E-bikes tend to fall into two categories of design: wistfully nostalgic and whimsical, or contemporary and minimalist. The one design style juxtaposes the tech, and the trend, with the history of the bicycle, the other associates it with present-day optimism about the future.

So Monday Motorbikes decided to toss a curveball to the e-bike consumer, and introduce a design inspired by 1980’s sensibilities. It’s called the M1, and its past-tense styling is garnering quite a bit of attention.

The M1 has the pared back 1980’s cool, that now-quaint response to 1970’s extravagance that was, at the time, edgy and boldly futuristic. A little geometry, a little punk rock, a little post-apocalyptic sci-fi that excludes those pesky 80’s pastels, and goes for black and metallic rock’n’roll. The M1 looks like a neo-retro scrambler.

Designed and crafted in California, the M1 boasts a number of advanced features like regenerative braking, a five-hour recharge time, and easy-to-use quick-swap batteries. The e-bike also meets California regulations with a top speed of 20 mph and a range of 35 miles.

The M1 is also equipped with a Sport mode that pushes the e-bike to speeds of up to 40 mph. Other unique amenities include a USB port, GPS tracking, Bluetooth capability, and a partner smartphone app.

Even better, Monday Motorbikes’ new e-bike is as environmentally friendly as a fully-electric bike: it packs a 100-percent recyclable battery.
