Forest Whitaker—who appears in the upcoming film ‘Labyrinth’ alongside Johnny Depp—has listed his longtime estate in Los Angeles. The property has privacy to burn: it’s located on a private street, and incorporates a main residence and a large guest house.
The gated enclave is listed at $5.995 million, and was built in the late 1990’s. Whitaker purchased the property in 2001, for $1.5 million.
The main house is a six-bed, six-bath, 5,641 square-foot modern take on California Mediterranean: a great deal of Spanish influence, especially in the great room, which features a double staircase leading to a magnificent second-floor gallery. The hardwood floors are attractively mixed, and blend with the wrought iron balusters to enhance the rustic countryside look which is alluded to in the support columns and tile used at the house’s entrance.
Asian and North African embellishments, stained glass, varying colors and textures, and a blend of modern and rustic give the home a great deal of visual interest. The five-and-five, 2,725 square foot guest house doesn’t deviate from the come-what-may appeal of the main house.
Without doubt, the real appeal of the property rests in its spectacularly reticent location, and 1.66 acres of land studded with mature trees and gardens, patios and terraces. Quite beautiful.
Whitaker’s first leading role—as jazz poet Charlie Parker in Clint Eastwood’s ‘Bird’—made him a heavyweight film star overnight; he took home an Oscar in 2007, for his portrayal of Idi Amin in ‘The Last King of Scotland.’
