Bentley’s Flying Spur Gets an Understated Upgrade with the ‘Black Edition’

Bentley has unveiled the latest special version Flying Spur in the model’s short history. Following the 100-car production run of the ‘Design Series,’ which was introduced this spring, Bentley brings the ‘Black Edition’ to the fore. The Flying Spur variation is a dramatic offering of limited-edition cosmetics.

Originally a variation of the Continental, the Flying Spur was spun off in 2014 as its own model line. The model is already geared to the younger set, who may want to distance themselves from what may be perceived as the traditional, stodgy ‘British Bulldog’ look of a Continental. With the ‘Black Edition’ variation, the target age demographic is made clear.

Since 2014, the vehicle has been offered in 12-cylinder and 8-cylinder configurations, with the ‘S’ sport model available since 2015. The ‘Black Edition’ car gets the V8 bi-turbo engine with the Sport-level tuning, bringing available power on tap to 521 horsepower, producing up to 502 lb-ft of torque. No changes as far as engine, and the rest of the powertrain also remains the same as the standard ‘S’ model Flying Spur. That includes the 8-speed automatic transmission with engine-specific mapping.

Changes, then, are cosmetic, a suite of subtle changes to the familiar. The car is, of course, available in black, with black brake calipers if desired, but Bentley will offer the edition in all exterior colors, and with red calipers, if that’s your taste. Changes toward the crepuscular side of the palette include tinted headlamps, and mucho black trim; 21” wheels are gloss black.

The cabin gets the most overt treatment, though, and that’s all well and good for a cosmetic-only special edition. The seats are black with red accents, and gloss black trim enhances the effect. A Mulliner option is available for the Black Edition, as well, with special cabin details including diamond-pattern upholstery stitching.

The Flying Spur Black Edition can reach a top speed of 190 MPH, and features a full complement of up-to-date tech and safety features.
