Mercedes-AMG Reveals its 503-HP GT4 Racecar in Belgium

Mercedes-AMG have been busy translating their astonishingly beautiful GT R into track lingo. This week, the GT4, the fruit of their efforts, has been revealed in all its track-ready glory. It’s an off-the-rack bit of racing couture, and it looks to be the perfect fit for the serious amateur or budding professional driver with an asphalt career in mind.

The car receives the same twin-turbo V8 as street-legal AMG GT models. The engine produces 503 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. The power rating is about 75 horsepower under the GT R’s; the reason for this is the Balance of Performance regulations that have been part of the FIA rulebook for the past several years. The transmission is a six-speed sequential in a transaxle configuration, to assist in turning dexterity and response.

A ready-to-drive racecar which is designed as a broad-spectrum competitor, suitable for short and long heats, the GT4 features a chassis and body constructed out of aluminum and carbon fiber. The roll cage is high-tensile steel, a concession to safety fundamentals, but power-to-weight is paramount.

The downforce needed for the lightweight design is helped along by an aero kit, some of the components of which come by way of the AMG GT R, including the dramatic rear wing; other components, like the front splitter, are GT4 only. Settings for differential and suspension may be adjusted for track conditions, providing 11 slip presets.

Price for entry is, at current exchange rates, a little over $230K.
