Having recently purchased another, larger home in Brentwood, musician John McVie has put up his former home in the city for sale. With an asking price of $2.995 million, McVie’s former residence extends to about 2,200 square feet of interior living space. The Fleetwood Mac founding member purchased the home for $2.535 million in the fall of 2014, signing papers about a month after the property been listed at $2.395.
The over-ask offer could indicate Mr. McVie is a fan of Philip Marlowe; Raymond Chandler owned the home in the early 1940’s, as he rode the wave of success from novels ‘The Big Sleep’ and ‘Farewell, My Lovely,’ both of which had been adapted into successful films during the period.
The home dates to 1927, and is beguiling from the outset, with a terra-cotta tile front walk, a gated entrance, a semicircular-tiled roof, and stucco exterior walls accented with pastels. The façade and front garden are bordered with a wild variety of flora, giving the property a lush appeal as a component of the first impression.
The interiors are largely rendered in white, with original plank oak wood floors, arched thresholds, and period fixtures. The living room features a tile-accented fireplace flanked by a pair of slag glass pendant sconces, collectively defining the room as a charmer.
Kitchen and bathroom renovations are perfectly respectable, but the addition of the extraordinary guest house is what grabs one’s attention. Designed as an artist’s studio, the stunning little detached structure is a nifty amalgam of poured concrete and steel-framed glass, and is currently purposed as a reading sanctuary. It contains a small bedroom and a bath with lovely tilework, giving the property as a whole two bedrooms and 2.5 baths.
McVie and guitarist Peter Green both jumped ship from John Mayall’s band and blues University, the Bluesbreakers, to form Fleetwood Mac; the addition of Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham turned them into a hit-making juggernaut. The band is currently between the Classic West and Classic East concerts.
