Zarooq motors has given the crossover SUV an unheard of combination: off-road capability, and supercar credibility.

The UAE startup’s Sand Racer 500 GT boasts a 6.2L V8 that’ll pump out nearly 520 horsepower. You never know when the pavement will transition into dune, especially if you live in Dubai, which is Zarooq’s home town.

The Sand Racer has as its namesake the quickest serpent in the Arabian Desert: the Psammophis Schokari. In Arabic, the name translates to Zarooq, and thereby hangs a tail.

The UAE startup is the first of its kind in the region, and the company hopes to begin an off-road or mixed-course racing competition to bring exposure to the vehicle, and bring the sport of competitive off-road driving to that part of the world.

For such a competition, of course, the Sand Racer is ideal. Comparisons to models from Jaguar and BMW have been made, but it most closely resembles the Lamborghini Urus in look, as well as spirit. The car has the juice, with a track-oriented configuration, to tickle 200 MPH on the speedometer, but its off-road capabilities keep its top speed to a very respectable 137.

Zarooq is a collection of inspired people with an aggressive approach to seeing dreams into fruition, and the Sand Racer is born out of the fact that they have already established numerous high-level partnerships in the development of the vehicle. On such relationship—with Germany’s Mansory—yielded the luxurious cabin interior, while Mansory’s Belgian facility contributed the carbon-fiber body.

After several years seeing dreams through R&D to the threshold of production, Zarooq boasts that the first Sand Racer 500 GTs are destined to roll off the line this year. The company hopes to begin distribution globally in the next couple of years.

Price: around $450K.
