Former Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Wally Szczerbiak has listed his estate on Long Island for sale. The NBA All-Star is asking $13.8 million for the property, which he purchased in 2000, for $4.35 million. The home has associations with New York royalty—in the early 1930’s, it was purchased by banker J.P. Morgan as a gift for his daughter.
A colonial revival dating to 1910, the brick home’s symmetrical façade is mirrored within immediately in the grand foyer, where an extremely formal double-staircase beckons from the gallery. An ornate chandelier sets the tone for the rest of the house.
Boasting beautiful period craftsmanship and attention to detail, the house is a pretty good example of what modern home design was a reaction against. The dining room features an ornate ceiling, with crown moldings and gilt flourishes, as well as an overall execution in fin-de-siecle textured wallpaper in an assertive shade of red.
The master bedroom is just as wildly stylized, and the fireplace gets a little lost with all the competition offered by the ceiling and the chandelier. The master bath follows through, even besting the bedroom for sheer chutzpah. There are eight bedrooms overall.
The home’s amenities include a generously proportioned home cinema with tiered seating, a wet bar, a billiards room, and a conservatory.
The property exterior features a pool with a pool house. The pool house contains its own kitchen, and may be suitable as a guest house. The grounds extend to very nearly five and a half acres.
Szczerbiak was an NBA All-Star in 2002, with the Timberwolves; he went on to play with the Celtics, Supersonics and Cavaliers. A series of injuries led him to a career in broadcasting; he is currently an analyst for the MSG Network, where he opines on the playing of the New York Knicks.
