Actress Dolly Read, who had a starring role in Russ Meyer’s 1970 satirical sexploitation classic ‘Beyond the Valley of the Dolls,’ has re-listed the home in Malibu she shared with her late husband Dick Martin, of Rowan and Martin fame. Read is now asking $9.4 million for the property, which was pulled from the market last year when it failed to sell at $10 million.
The actress and her husband called the traditional-style in Broad Beach home for nearly four decades. Martin passed away in 2008.
Dating to the mid-1940’s, the main residence features a second-floor wrap-around deck and two stories. There are nearly 4,700 square feet of interior living space on the property, between the main house and guest house. There are two bedrooms and three baths throughout; a master suite and two baths in the main house, and a one-and-one guesthouse.
The interior of the main house is warm and relaxed, with exposed, raw wood beams, exposed brick, and tile or hardwood floors. Ceilings are tongue-in-groove, and second-floor ceilings are vaulted.
The kitchen is the heart of the home, with a trattoria-style execution, and a niche cooking area with a massive 10-burner stove.
As for the guest house over the garage, it uses the same overall interior architecture and design aesthetic, and features a small fireplace and a private terrace. The houses are joined by landscaping architecture which merges a great deal of brick, and a park-like layout, and a patio with a boardwalk to the beach.
English-born Read got her start in show business in the early 1960’s, working for Hammer Studios, then moving on to Hef’s empire; in the 1970’s, after starring in Meyer’s ‘Beyond…,’ she acted in television.
