This week, Jaguar revealed a new, limited edition street-legal track car. The model is a variation of Jag’s XE, a sports sedan that carries the weight of some substantial numbers; JLR is calling it the XE SV Project 8, a moniker long and mysterious enough to raise some serious expectations.
The Project 8 is the brainchild of JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations department, and let’s get some numbers out of the way first: the car’s engine, a 5.0L supercharged V8, pushes 592 horsepower, enough to propel the model to the fastest 0-60 acceleration time of any regular production Jaguar model in history, 3.3 seconds. Here’s another number: 300. That’s the number of examples that will roll off the line to the tune of $190K a pop before the model is retired. The cars will be produced exclusively as left-hand drivers, but will be made available in North America.
The Project 8’s gearbox is a Quickshift 8-speed paddle transmission, but the unit may be switched to manual if desired, and controlled with an F-style lever stick. The power is routed to all four wheels. The car features a titanium exhaust system.
The frame of the car is a super lightweight design fashioned from aluminum and carbon fiber, and the car features racecar details like F1-style silicon ceramic wheel bearings, adjustable shocks, and an active rear differential. An optional Track Pack version of the car adds a roll cage, carbon-fiber racing-spec seats and a harness, and loses the back seats, but it doesn’t look like this variation will be made available to North American buyers.
The cabin of the Project 8 won’t lose much in the way of creature comforts: a cutting-edge infortainment system with a 10.2” touchscreen, and a 380-watt sound system by British hi-fi house Meridian will grace the interior, along with some artfully used Alcantara and carbon fiber accents.
The Project 8 is the first production Jaguar to be entirely hand-built by Special Vehicle Operations craftspeople at the division’s brand spanking new facility in Warwickshire.
