Aston Martin’s first all-electric car will be limited to just 155 examples. Based on the automaker’s Rapide sedan, the RapidE will lose the 6.0L V12 in favor of an eco-friendly, supercar-level powerplant which is, as of now, a matter of mystery; Aston is thus far reticent to even begin discussing specific details, but the car’s rating will hover around 1000 horsepower, and the range at highway speeds is currently estimated at 200 miles.
The company does assert that production will commence in 2019, however. And, Chinese tech and media giant LeEco is out as a collaborative partner, and British alternative energy development and research specialist Williams Advanced Engineering is in; WAE is part of the Williams Group, a racecar engineering company that was founded in the late 1970’s.
For Aston, the RapidE represents a way for the company to establish itself as the leading all-electric exotic production car manufacturer among established carmakers. As with its gas-engine vehicles, Aston’s aristocratic and exclusive cachet will provide their EVs with a huge amount of marketing muscle in their class.
Definitive U.S. pricing for the model is a far-flung matter for surmise at this point, but the fact that Aston has switched gears a little, and decided upon a limited production run, suggests the model will be priced far higher than the Rapide’s current baseline. In their home country, the company is floating the figure of $250K. Aston will begin taking orders for the model next month, however, asking a 10% commitment from buyers.
