There are few vehicles as recognizable as the Volkswagen microbus, and now the iconic camper van is back. Hoping to continue to cash in on 60’s VW models as symbols of freedom, individuality, and counter-culture cachet, the Volkswagen Group is revising the classic road-tripper for the generation discovering Kerouac and Kesey on Kindle.
“Emotional cars are very important for the brand. We are selling loads of Beetles still, particularly in U.S. markets. But we will also have the Microbus that we showed, which we have recently decided we will build,” said VW exec Herbert Diess.
A production version of the I.D. Buzz concept will be crafted, showing off a sleek new design and strong electric power train. The updated version of the Microbus features two motors paired with a 110-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. That power translates to 369 horsepower and a range of up to 270 miles.
Although an arrival date has yet to be announced, the interior of the new model looks just as comfortable as its earlier iterations, albeit with a futuristic twist.
