Roush Performance’s singular role as the pre-eminent tuner of the Ford Mustang always seems to be in flux; the folks under Jack Roush’s guidance in Michigan are always working on a better mousetrap.
If the name rings a bell, that’s because it acts as both homage to the NAA P-51 fighter plane, a fast and high-flying powerhouse that contributed to Allied air supremacy in the Second World War. Roush uses the 2017 Mustang GT as a base for the P-51, and call the modified vehicle the most powerful muscle car in the world. And, it’s a pre-title conversion, so a full warranty applies.
The car’s kinetic transformation takes place via a Roush Eaton TVS 5.0L V8, a model the company calls the ‘Coyote’; the powerplant produces 727 horsepower via an upgraded Rouch Phase II supercharger system, and is paired with a six-speed transmission which is available as an automatic or manual.
The P-51 package includes Roush’s Active Exhaust System, which offers drivers a choice of three preset exhaust sounds. A custom setting can be adjusted via smartphone, with various parameters changing the sound of the P-51. Exhaust sound shaping is something Roush has been working on for several years, and apparently the results are impressive.
Other features of the beefed-up Mustang include Roush TrakPak components, Weld 19” black forged wheels and carbon fiber lower front splitter among them, and a distinctive front grille which gives the P-51 package-enhanced car a slick look and channels airflow. A hood scoop raises the face of the car for a more assertive, track-ready appearance.
Cosmetics include the Roush name and model plaques and badging, and an interior swathed in Amaretto-toned Tuscany leather.
Price for a P-51 package-equipped 2017 Mustang GT is $42.5K above base. The package will be limited to…you guessed it: 51 examples.
