A property which served as the one-time home of musician John Legend has re-entered the market; the striking mid-century house in the Hollywood Hills is being marketed by its current owners with an asking price of just under $2.5 million. Legend and his wife, model Chrissy Teigen, sold the home in 2014 for $2 million.
After purchasing the home in 2007, Legend and Teigen embarked on a considerable revision of the property. The house—which dates to the early 1960’s—had potential, but recent renovations were less than inspired. Los Angeles design firm Desiderata gave the property exterior a sculptural feel with steel panes and a bronze entry gate.
The home’s interior living space measures about 2,200 square feet, and contains a trio of bedrooms, although one has been transformed into a home recording studio. There are 2.75 baths throughout.
In addition to the steel and bronze, a fair amount of poured concrete makes up the residence as it stands today. What results is a very effective contrast between metallic and industrial surfaces, and the exposed beams, and textured tropical hardwood accents and cabinetry, which distinguish the inside of the home.
With a wide-open concept, the home’s common living areas suggest loft spaces and Eastern design elements, but the more artistic influences shine through in the choices made regarding fixtures. Lighting is modern, but the kitchen pendants are more artisanal than industrial; on the other hand, the rounded kitchen vent is right out of a mid-century factory. Use of the same textured wood throughout the home, and soft, dark cool tones tie it all together.
The exterior soaking tub—made of basalt—marks part of the home’s abundant interior-exterior flow, and is situated beside a reflecting pool as part of a very focused look to the East that includes bamboo plantings as part of the landscaping, and a Japanese-style hot-tub.
Legend’s list of collaborations and guest appearances is rather long; the singer’s adept mingling of contemporary pop sensibilities with the credibility of jazz vocal history has him in great demand in the industry. His last studio effort is 2016’s ‘Darkness and Light’; the album has been streamed millions of times.
