BMW is looking to redefine the coupe with the introduction of its new 6 Series Gran Turismo. Throwing out traditional terminology and model lines, the new 6 Series breaks the rules and looks good doing it.
The line was originally made up of a 5 Series-sized convertible and coupe. However, it now features the convertible, the Gran Coupe four-door, and the Gran Turismo hatchback. That’s right—BMW has axed the two-door coupe.
While the 6 Series is now missing a coupe model, BMW is making it clear that it’s still focused on its midsized designs. The taller, more family-friendly hatchback looks like the 5 Series sedan, but it offers more legroom, and 31 cubic feet of cargo space when the seats are up.
The new Gran Turismo is geared toward busy family life, but it’s still stylish. Twelve exterior color options and Luxury package or M Sport package add-ons allow for personalizing. The interior is also nearly identical to its 5 Series predecessor, including familiar features ambient lighting, automatic climate control, standard leather, and the same 10.25-inch infotainment screen.
BMW continues to include technological upgrades like stop assist, evasion aid, automatic parking, adaptive cruise control, and several other warning systems in the series.
The 6 Series Gran Turismo is available only in a 640i trim level, which boasts a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter engine pumping out 335 hp. However, BMW’s new vehicle is quite a bit pricier than the entry-level 540i, starting at $70,695.
