If you’re thinking of buying a convertible this summer, you may want to wait until August, when McLaren will begin deliveries of their 2018 570S Spider. McLaren just unveiled the targa-top pushbutton-convertible version of their entry-level 570S, and it looks like a warm-weather winner which could be a top-seller for the automaker.

With elder siblings the 570S coupe and 570GT hatchback, the 570S Spider could be the upstart younger brother in the model lineup. It doesn’t lose much, if any of the coupe’s or GT’s performance and handling dexterity, and, as a T-top, it’s extremely versatile. The top mechanism adds 100 pounds to the curb weight.

The top is made from a tough composite material, and is operated electrically, natch. The panels are automatically stowed away under a neat tonneau cover when not in use; at the push of a button, the cover rises, and the panels shift into place overhead. The process takes only about fifteen seconds, and can be accomplished at speeds up to 25 MPH. A wind deflector may also be raised and lowered when the car is in open-top mode, for a little relief at higher speeds on sunny days, when roof-up isn’t an option.

The car features the dihedral doors, 3.8L V8 engine and engine placement, and MonoCell II carbon-fiber tub of the 570 series; the latter makes the need of additional chassis support for the drop-top unnecessary. Much of the cabin equipment also extends from the greater series design.

The 570S Spider will reach 60 in 3.1 seconds.  Open-roof, the car will hit 196 MPH; the reduced drag of having the roof closed brings the top speed to 204 MPH.

Currently available to order, the 570S Spider’s sticker begins at $208K, or about $20K more than the 570S coupe.
