L.A. Clippers guiding spirit, head coach Doc Rivers, is happily staying put on the West Coast, and just picked up a Malibu Spanish revival to prove it. The former Celtics mastermind paid a little more than $9.5 million for the property, a Mediterranean-influenced design located in Malibu Cove.
Incorporating richly the easy charm of the style, the home’s Saltillo tile and glass-paned, double-door front entry suggest relaxation and invitation. The home’s interior makes use of both severe angularity and soft, sweeping lines, with a contemporary roofline, rounded arches, and sculpted or vaulted ceilings. Wall niches, plaster walls and tiled floors give the home a tremendous amount of charm.
The house dates to 1978, and interior living space measures about 3,400 square feet. There are four bedrooms and five baths throughout, and the second-floor master suite features a private balcony and sitting room, and glass walls that open to the Pacific. The common living space is single floor, and double-height, with a soaring sense of space, more sliding glass opening to the exterior, and an execution which balances the traditions of the style and modernity very nicely.
Also of note is the kitchen: washed out cabinetry align the home with the setting, and another set of sliding glass doors open onto a sheltered outside dining terrace.
Bostonians are still reeling over Rivers’ defection to warmer climes; Rivers spent nearly a decade in Beantown, bringing honor to the Green before moving to Los Angeles. After taking the Clippers to 57 wins his first season, he was made President of Basketball Operations for the team, in 2014.
