Interestingly, Porsche recently revealed their 2018 911 GT2 RS through an unlikely channel: the E3, or Los Angeles Electronics Entertainment Expo.
The reveal of the new model was timed to bring attention to the new model as the cover car of the Xbox One game ‘Forza Motorsport 7’; the game will also be a featured game for the upcoming Xbox One X, making the unveiling a mutually beneficial maneuver for both Porsche and Microsoft as they each roll out their dazzling newest.
The GT2 RS—a rear-wheel drive grand tourer—will receive a highly tuned variant of the 3.8L twin-turbocharged six cylinder of the 911 Turbo; the engine will be fed by larger turbochargers and water injection. The gearbox will be Porsche’s PDK dual-clutch paddle-shift automatic. Horsepower rating? Uncertain, but the company claims the GT2 RS will be the most powerful production 911 ever built.
But all details about the car are scant at this point—Porsche is tight-lipped about numbers, and is cannily increasing ‘net speculation by being taciturn, and not releasing tentative figures—but the huge front vents and rear wing give the car the high drama of a track vehicle.
It’s worth noting that the unveiling of the GT2 RS via the E3 marks an interesting shift in advertising strategy; the car is only one of 700 sportscars and supercars included in the program, so Porsche’s GT2 RS on the cover of the game elicits some surmise about the potential for instant mythmaking involved in the move as a marketing device.
As for the Xbox game ‘Forza Motorsport 7’, it will hit stores in early October.
