Cecil B. Demille’s former residence has a new owner: Angelina Jolie. The actress purchased the iconic home for $24.5 million, a little less than the asking price, which had been set at $24.95 million. The home hadn’t been put up for sale in a decade; priced at $20 million at that time, it failed to sell.
A very famous house, and a good investment opportunity, the estate—set on a little over two acres in Los Feliz—was constructed in 1913. DeMille paid a little less than $30K for the home, a huge amount at the time. The property is situated in Laughlin Park, and features a guest house, tea house and a detached studio. It was lovingly preserved by its current owners, who spent six years revising and restoring it in the 2000’s.
The main house contains six bedrooms and ten baths amid the 10,000 square feet of interior living space. A beaux-arts inspired home with a Mediterranean exterior, the home features semicircular tile roof and wrought-iron balcony balustrades, and also the neoclassical design flourishes, opulence, and emphasis on formal layout characteristic of beaux-arts. A grand 1910’s L.A. home.
The renovation has left historical features intact. The library features a rail ladder and mahogany paneling. Marble fireplaces are built of incredibly figured stone, each singular. Light fixtures are period, and ceilings may be ornamental. The kitchen stove looks to be a beautiful repro.
The studio house has had a retractable glass wall added, and would make a terrific office or music building. The guest house faces the pool, and contains some lovely period details as well. The grounds include gardens and meandering paths with spectacular views.
Jolie and ex-husband Brad Pitt were active last year in the market, selling off commonly-owned real estate; Jolie is testing the waters solo with the DeMille residence. She directed this year’s ‘First They Killed my Father,’ an adaptation of Loung Ung’s harrowing coming of age memoir of Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge era.
