Following hot on the heels of the recent purchase of an iconic shingle-style home on Long Island, Robert Downey Jr. has picked up a modest little investment in Malibu through a LLC. The actor paid $3.8 million for the property, a single-story with a somewhat stodgy exterior which dates to the early 1970’s.
The interiors, though, have been sensitively renovated, with travertine or multi-colored slate tile floors, some interesting accent stone and tile work in the kitchen, a great deal of woodgrain.
The kitchen is the heart of the home. The many hard angles throughout the house—many of which surprise the eye—find a key in the trapezoidal island, which features a gloss hardwood cap and is offset by aquamarine. The suggested enclosure around the kitchen, rendered in mid-toned woodgrain, breaks up the open concept nicely without resorting to full accent partitions.
The total interior living space of the house comes to a little less than 3,400 square feet; there are three bedrooms and three baths overall. Tones are cool, to balance out all the wood, and a series of clerestory accent windows in the common living area opens the space up nicely.
The property exterior incorporates a deck, a patio with fire feature and outdoor lounge, an outdoor kitchen, a pool, and a putting green.
Downey continues the ‘Iron Man’ film franchise, acting all the way to the bank. He is a terror as a supporting actor, having walked off with many films, including ‘Wonder Boys,’ ‘Zodiac,’ and—laughably—‘Tropic Thunder,’ a subversive bit of collective ego-flexing which he managed, thankfully, to subvert.
