For its 50th birthday, Mercedes-AMG gave itself a little gift: a muscular and flashy limited edition. Mercedes unveiled the car before the start of the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, emphasizing its racing heritage, as well as the fact that the model is not outfitted with the GT3 road car’s 4.0L twin turbo, and instead features the race car’s less efficient but decidedly hair-raising 6.2L naturally-aspirated V8 engine.
Airflow is liberated via restriction-free intake and exhaust systems; the car is also rendered free to make a little more noise, and scare the dickens out of the more mundane cars sharing the road. Weight is relieved with a generous helping of carbon fiber—air intakes, aerofoil, diffuser, flics, skirts and grille—which also augments the shadowy black-on-black finish, high fashion ad nauseam of automobile coloration these days.
The GT3 50 will be limited to only five examples. The car is decorated as a high-drama racing vehicle and promotional homage, displaying the fragments ’50 years of driving performance’ and ’50 years AMG’ prominently on the body and interior. The requisite limited-ed dash badge lets passengers know how many were produced and why.
Cabin features include a racing harness, carbon fiber racing seat, roll cage, and a racing wheel and instrument cluster which use color for assisted memory during moments of high-speed duress. Very cool.
If you want one, though, you’ll have to travel to Germany to buy it. The company will only be delivering the GT3 50 to new owners in Affalterbach, where AMG has been headquartered since 1976.
