Former ‘Thinking Man’s Talk Show Host’ Dick Cavett Seeks $62M for Montauk Estate

Legendary talk-show host Dick Cavett has listed Tick Hall, the home he’s owned on Montauk since the late 1960’s. The perceptive interviewer is asking $62 million for the property.

A classic Long Island shingle-style, Tick Hall is so named for the great numbers of the pests that are found on the Montauk Moorlands. The house was constructed in the 1880’s, and has a long and varied history as an iconic home, being one of the so-called ‘seven sisters’ of Montauk, a group of houses designed by Stanford White for a powerful financier. Cavett apparently had Edward Albee as a rival for the home, but the playwright backed out.

Like its name, the house is a product of that indomitable Long Island spirit which favors pragmatism to propriety. Although filled with striking examples of craftsmanship, it isn’t a fancy house, and finds its comforts in space, light, and landscape; a rambling, compartmental layout, windows wherever possible, and sets of French doors inviting interior/exterior interplay.

The house sits on twenty acres which border a 170-acre oceanfront park. The park adds 1,200 feet of coastline to the property’s 900, and is a primary reason why the setting probably looks much as it did when Cavett bought the home.

Cavett, whose relaxed, insightful interviewing style drew a broad spectrum of influential people to his television program, may be seen these days popping up as a guest star, or in a cameo appearance.
