The Rolls-Royce Sweptail Is Possibly the Most Expensive New Car Ever

As far as bespoke Rolls-Royce models go, this one-off coupe is a blue ribbon effort. It’s called the Sweptail, and it’s the result of a close collaboration between a client and the Rolls custom division.

From the side and rear the car is very unique, with a fastback aesthetic; the client who commissioned the car requested a panoramic roof, and Rolls was happy to oblige. The car also features a familiarly aggressive and somewhat stolid front end, with an enlarged grille. From the front end to the rear, the car is an interesting design statement, as it moves from a front-end position suggesting stalemate into a general sense of liberation through the fluidity of form that follows. It could be viewed as somewhat contradictory, though, and whether a poetic resolution is accomplished is a matter for the eye of the beholder.

The car is the product of an extended project; the client initially contacted Rolls in 2013 about the car, and was actively involved in the design, material choices and finishing from the start. Macassar ebony and Paldao trim, a set of custom, hand-made luggage, and a pair of leather and carbon fiber alcoves holding a set of custom made attaché cases are a few of the personal details incorporated into the Sweptail.

Other custom features include an electronically-controlled refrigerated compartment which holds a bottle of champagne and a pair of flutes; the push of a button raises the refreshment.

The price tag is unknown. However, Torsten Mueller, CEO of Rolls-Royce, said, “it was substantially expensive. Substantially expensive. You can easily say that this is probably the most expensive new car in ages… or ever.”
