If you’re a fledgling or weekend track driver kicking tires, BMW has a new model to offer you. They’ve taken their M4 and used it as a foundation for a track-only vehicle, the M4 GT4.
The M4 GT4 was developed specifically for the FIA GT4 class, which is a grand tourer series for hobbyist or potential career drivers who may or may not want to turn full professional. The cars are close to the road car models which serve as their foundations, and the series rules highlight an egalitarian standard which prevents cost escalation, and keeps the focus on the skill of the driver.
So the GT4 version of the M4 uses the latter’s engine, the same stock 3.0L twin-turbo I6, but tweaked to bring the horsepower rating above 430; a special engine computer’s ‘power sticks’ alter horsepower to align with differing performance guidelines.
The GT4 M4 is equipped with an exhaust system geared toward racing, improving airflow. The transmission is a seven-speed dual-clutch, tuned for track-sensitive shifting.
Weight reduction was considered for the model, as well, and much of the body is carbon fiber; the GT4 gets a carbon fiber hood, doors, front splitter and rear spoiler, among other components. Hood and trunk are quick-release designs. The roll cage, suspension, and locking differential all reflect the car’s purpose. In the cabin, distractions are reduced to a minimum.
BMW gave the M4 GT4 a trial at Dubai, and the model did very well. It is now for sale at about $190K.
