Tobey Maguire’s real-estate run continues. Recently, an LLC connected with the actor purchased this house, which was designed by architect Clive Wilkinson as a personal residence. The LLC paid $3.375 million for the home. Wilkinson purchased the lot in West Hollywood in 2003, for a little less than $700K, and built the home in 2007.
Betraying the actor’s eye for a singular residence and, as a corollary, a good short-term investment, the home is typically striking. A stridently contemporary-style design, the architect used the chilly abstractions at the design’s foundation and really enjoyed himself. There are all kinds of competing textures and planar lines, all seeking emphasis. The result is a dwelling which establishes pattern entirely for the reason of interrupting it, dispelling the stark atmosphere which is often associated with contemporary interiors.
Color is an important element in the design, and Wilkinson used contrasted warm and cool tones to achieve the pleasingly surprising effect. But, wood tones are used in much the same way, for a more subtle effect, combining into a vision which refuses to settle down into a single comprehensive interpretation of what a home’s living spaces should look like, and how they should affect those who live there, offering the utilitarian and the playful as an interactive dialogue. It’s not surprising that Wilkinson imagined the interiors of several advertising company headquarters, as well as the office design at Googleplex.
Aside from real estate wheeling and dealing, Maguire does manage to get a little acting done now and again. He lent his voice to ‘The Boss Baby’; the film is currently in theaters.
