After about a year of waiting for a sale, producer Joel Silver has decided to market his Malibu estate a little more aggressively, giving its asking a 10% chop.
Silver purchased the Carbon Beach residence in 2003, for $14.4 million. He began to market it quietly about fourteen months ago, initially for around $60 million, before listing it formally for $57.5 million two months later.
The house is a fairly imposing blend of brick, glass and timber, dating probably to the late 1970’s. The somewhat contemporary exterior is not particularly graceful, and comes across as more dated than increasingly historical. The rest of the home more than makes up for it, though.
Inside, all the glass translates into a pretty heady sense of liberation, especially beachside, where a double-height expanse of a great room greets the ocean and sky, and a second-floor gallery adds a nice sense of scale. Interior walls are generally brick, left natural or whitewashed, and floors are dark wood or hexagonal tile, for a honeycomb effect; ceilings are finished dark, as well, and are vaulted and open trussed.
The home measures a little less than 5,900 square feet, and contains five bedrooms and six baths. Along the tennis-court length of the home, the kitchen, dayroom, den with fireplace, and living room all meander in a well-lit progression toward the great room, the heart of the home. The master suite features glass walls, a second-floor terrace overlooking the beach, and a nicely proportioned master bath.
The house was designed for entertaining, and the property exterior contains extensive brick terracing with plentiful lounge space. A large pool is fitted between the house and ocean, along the 137’ of beach frontage.
Joel Silver has produced over 120 films, including the Lethal Weapon and Matrix franchise movies. His upcoming production ‘Suburbicon’ was written by Joel and Ethan Coen, and directed by George Clooney; the film is due in theaters in November.
