Mercedes Introduces Jaw-Dropping G-Class Designo Manufaktur Editions

Mercedes-Benz is giving the G-Class a significant overhaul for 2018. That’s significant for the company, because it’s the only model the brand makes—and, aside from the Volvo 240—one of the only models in modern automobile production history that have benefited from an ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ approach to its general sense of style from its company.

The model as it stands in 2017 looks fundamentally the same as it did in 1990; as far as that’s concerned, Mercedes won’t be rocking the boat too much. Why is that? Well, the G-Class sells a very specific image. It’s probably the most acute representation of the utilitarian-luxury vehicle one can think of. There’s the Hummer, of course. But, to the buyer enthralled with G-Class styling, a Hummer is just plain obnoxious, a case of embarrassing overcompensation and absolutely tasteless ostentation, a crass crypto-combo of dollar and military fashion.

The G-Class, by contrast, taps into the historic, the adventurous, the aristocratic, and the poetic allure of the outsider. It would look entirely at home on the Veldt, which means it looks coolly detached in more prosaic surroundings. Say, Greenwich. Better yet, Mahwah. Part of the luxury of a G-Class is the luxury of hip unease, of a pretention to authenticity.

So, although the series will look quite similar next year, the 2018 G-Class will be getting some substantial updates within, and in the cabin. Before the current form of the flashy box is retired, though, Mercedes wants to up the ante for prospective buyers who may be sitting on the fence between past-cool and future-cool, weighting the scales in favor of the former to clear stock. And, voila, the limited Designo Manufaktur and Exclusive Edition G 350 d, 500, 63 and 65, the last hurrah of the old school model.

The Designo Manufaktur option is a cosmetic package that includes Designo paint colors Magma Red, Mystic White and Obsidian Black; accents in Obsidian set off the finish, and the Nappa leather interior features contrasting stitching and steering wheel. Interior trim is super high-gloss lacquer. The Designo Manufaktur package includes 5-spoke AMG alloy wheels with sport tires.

The Exlusive Edition is reserved for the AMG G-Class 63 and 65 models, and features AMG sport strips, a spare cover matching the paint color, and polished 21” wheels. A stainless steel under guard keeps the Exclusive Edition models off-road credible, and interiors will be rendered in two-tone leather.

Pricing for the Designo Manufaktur G 350 d is set at $120K; the G 500 at $133K. The Exclusive Edition AMG G 63 is priced at $178K; the G 65 at $314K.

Deliveries commence in September.
