About a year ago, BMW revealed the ongoing progress of their iNext concept, a futuristic autonomous-driving passenger car able to transport with little or no human intervention. BMW stated that the option of driving yourself will—thankfully—remain optional.
Now, the company is moving closer to production, having selected a location for the manufacture of the Level-4 autonomous iNext. It is important to note at this point that the copper-colored Vision Next 100, featured in the photos below, is not the iNext slated to appear on sales floors in 2021. The Vision Next 100 was the BMW Centennial Geneva show car that indicated the company’s dedication to continued innovation in the coming decades.
The iNext is an all-electric design and, from the indications coming by way of BMW brass, will feature a strikingly alternative passenger car design. This is to be expected: BWM wants to make an extraordinary splash when the model does appear, as they’re getting into the water a little late in the game.
Their idea is this: a crossover revision that’ll shake up the industry. As it will appear in 2021, the self-driving crossover with digital connectivity will be entering a marketplace where fellow Germans Mercedes and Audi, as well as Jaguar and Tesla, will already be duking it out; Tesla’s is already here, and the others are coming. BMW is betting on being very fashionably late to the party, which is to say, entirely on time for BMW, if all goes well.
Details on the iNext are scant; but, as BMW has revealed the Dingolfing plant as the seat of production, the mid-sized model is moving steadily toward the streets.
