Sting and Trudie Styler’s penthouse apartment at 15 Central Park West has hit the market. The musician and actor are asking $56 million for the duplex, which they purchased upon the building’s completion in 2008, for $27 million.
15 Central Park West has been one of the most desirable residential buildings in the world since it opened about a decade ago. Satirically nicknamed the ‘Limestone Jesus’ for the concentration of power and influence represented by its residents, it contains some of the most valuable real estate in the city. If the $56 million asking price of Sting and Styler’s unit is realistic—and the building’s sales record over the past two years indicates that it is—then it constitutes a more than considerable return on the couple’s investment, less renovation expenses.
The renovations include a spiral staircase, a winding staircase, and an ornamental open fireplace in a spiral design. The interiors generally are thought-provoking, and contrast modern conventions with vibrancy. The kitchen, in particular, is executed as a charmingly carefree room, with subway tile and the industrial-inspired spiral staircase playfully commenting on the space. But the unit is altogether free of the more leaden trappings of a high-end apartment like this, and the consequentially gloomy emphasis on material, surface, and contrived atmosphere.
The property extends to more than 5,400 square feet of interior living space, augmented by an outdoor terrace measuring just shy of an additional 400. Views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline are spectacular.
Sting is currently on tour in support of his latest studio release, 57th and 9th; Trudie Styler’s directorial debut ‘Freak Show’ premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February.
