So, in advance, the answer is, ‘Well, of course it can tow your Airstream fifth wheel.’
And, yes, the Porsche Cayenne just entered the Guinness Book of World Records for towing the Airbus A380, which weighs about 630,000 pounds. The old record, held by a car now too ashamed to identify itself, was smashed by a margin of around 250,000 pounds.
An idea from the breezy, insouciant mind of Porsche technician Richard Payne—who also knows a good photo op when he conjures one, and possible advertising potential, too—the notion quickly gathered momentum among the folks at Air France. Payne had calculated the Cayenne’s capabilities of engine, transmission and frame, and was sure the task could be accomplished. And, so it was. To a distance of 42 meters, which isn’t a bad showing, considering the weight differential between the two vehicles.
Guinness was called. Pints all around.
The diesel-powered Cayenne S was helped along by its 4.1L, twin-turbo V8 engine; that’s 385 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque on tap. A gasoline-powered Cayenne Turbo S performed the same stunt a bit later.
The connection to the airliner was secured by using a towing bar specially designed (naturally) for the purpose. The bar was fitted with standard mounting equipment for the Cayenne.
The stunt didn’t only land the Cayenne in the record book, though. Mr. Payne, who was driving the manual-transmission Cayenne, has his place there, now, as well.
