Novelist Jonathan Safran Foer has listed his townhouse in Brooklyn. The author of ‘Everything is Illuminated’—named among the ‘20 Under 40’ writers by The New Yorker Magazine—has set the asking price for the Boerum Hill residence at $10.495 million. Foer purchased the property in early 2014, for $5.4 million.
The townhouse has seen a complete renovation. It was sold only seven years ago for $1.33 million, restored by the owner, and listed in 2013 for $7.9 million. Foer quietly purchased it some months later.
The townhouse measures 26’ in width, and spans 8,000 square feet across four floors and a basement. It contains eight bedrooms, and 5.5 baths.
For a property that was once in a complete state of disrepair, the sea-change in the fin-de-siècle property is remarkable. Inlaid wood floors, a graceful staircase design, and an occasional modern flourish are a few of the elements incorporated.
Most appealing, though, is the home’s sense of scale, space, and light. The interior has been rendered in off-white, and wood finish is on the brighter side, but the residence’s abundant glass is unusual, and the amount of natural light allowed into the interior is intoxicating. The kitchen in particular, with its wall of windows, and French doors opening to an outdoor balcony and staircase, is remarkably expansive.
Foer’s creative writing thesis for Princeton became the novel ‘Everything is Illuminated’; the 2005 film was directed by Liev Schreiber, and starred Elijah Wood. 2016’s ‘Here I Am’ was a monumental literary effort from the young writer.
