Japanese tire maker Bridgestone has come up with a way to prevent bicyclists from ever again having to endure the hassle of dealing with a flat. The company’s answer is their new air-free bicycle tire.
The air-free tires utilize a series of thermoplastic resin spokes that reach across the inner walls of the wheel. The air-free design keeps the cushion, but loses the fragility.
The company first revealed the AirFree Concept automobile tires over half a decade ago, with the design intended to make biking more appealing; reduce CO2 emissions, and increase day-to-day dependability, and more urban commuters might turn to the humble bicycle as a means of personal transport.
Bridgestone will make the tires using recyclable material, mainly from used and discarded tires.
The Air-Free Tires are slated to make their first production appearance in 2019, just in time for possible use in the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
