Professional football legend and Steelers alumnus Lynn Swann is settling into a new home in Hancock Park. The recently-appointed USC Athletic Director purchased the house for $3.08 million, down from the $3.15 asking price. The property had been on the market for about two months.

The Contemporary style home dates to 2014, and measures 4,350 square feet. It contains five bedrooms and 5.5 baths, and features a whitewashed and timber-clad exterior.

The home’s long, strident lines and whitewash contrast pleasingly with the grain of the wide-plank floors and staircase treads. The floating staircase is one of the real focal points of the wide-open communal space; a second is the accent partition wall with an incorporated gas fireplace.

Featuring glass walls that open frequently onto the property, and a wealth of intersecting planes that bring more than one surprise to the property, the home constitutes a thoughtful design. Ceilings are especially interesting, decorative in the Contemporary style, which means decorative in the abstract: pared down to suggestion only. The ceiling design moves from a sense of limited enclosure to a sense of openness or liberation constantly, and the lines evoke continuity.

The property exterior incorporates a second-floor terrace and a small pool into the grounds; the design works the pool into the home itself, while an interior wet bar opens onto the exterior via a corner glass wall.

Lynn Swann began his football career on the field at USC. Last summer, he returned to the University as the Athletic Director. In between, he was a wide receiver for the Steelers, and helped the team win four Super Bowls; he was named MVP of Super Bowl X.
