Rolling Stone Keith Richards has had a duplex apartment in Greenwich Village for sale for a year now. The iconic rock guitar slinger, whose steady, soulful riffs provided the hooks and foundations for a long string of Rolling Stones classics, has asked $12.23 million for the property, which he purchased in 2015 with his wife, former model Patti Hansen. The couple purchased the residence for $10.5 million.
The duplex is a combination of three units in a limestone building bordering Washington Square. The apartment measures 2,700 square feet, and contains three bedrooms and four baths.
The residence’s interior is a contemporary blend of whitewash, strident lines, and warm wood. In keeping with the current fashion, it’s very spare, with little in the way of visual distraction. Cabinetry and lighting are familiarly unadorned, with the exception of the molecular chandelier in the dining room, which is a pretty familiar site these days, too.
Ceilings and walls comprise a series of planes, and that—as well the grain of the floors and staircase—is where the contemporary design finds its most convincing expression. There’s quite a bit to work with, and an individual with a vision could transform the fundamental property with a few brushstrokes.
For exterior living space, the residence features a step-up portal from the living room to a terrace; there are two other terraces accessible from the apartment.
Keith Richards’ most recent solo studio project was the album ‘Crosseyed Heart’; the 2015 release was well received critically, and featured Stones sax mainstay Bobby Keys, L.A. guitar legend Waddy Wachtel, and a long list of guest stars, including Aaron Neville.
