Sony took the camera scene by storm recently with the unveiling of its new A9 full-frame, mirrorless camera, the Japanese brand’s most advanced camera to date.

Sony addressed all of the issues owners of the A7 had by giving the A9 a 20 fps burst speed, a no-blackout viewer, the fastest Sony autofocus system ever, and a battery life double that of its predecessor’s.

The A9 also boasts the first stacked Sony full-frame sensor in such a large camera: a 24.2-megapixel sensor ‘stacked’ into multiple layers in order to handle the high-resolution data taken in by the camera at faster speeds. One layer is for the pixel area, another is dedicated to processing, and the last handles memory. The sensor still boasts a backlit design for low-light shooting. The A9’s ISO range is 100 to 51,200, expandable to 50 to 204,800.

By giving the A9 the 20 fps burst, Sony set up the full-frame camera to capture up to 362 JPEGs or 241 RAW images while still utilizing the camera’s continuous autofocus system.

The A9 can record video at 4K quality, and offers enhanced color and depth to playback.

An optional new 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 GM OSS lens was designed to accompany the A9, allowing the new camera to reach its full potential.

Sony will release the A9 in May; the camera body will fetch $4,500.
