Agnes Moorehead’s former Los Angeles home has changed hands for $16 million. The home had been listed for $18.5 million prior to the sale, although it had been listed with an asking price of about $19 million as far back as at least 2013.

The home dates to the mid 1920’s, and is designed in the Mediterranean style. Moorehead purchased the house in the early 1950’s.

With eight bedrooms and seven baths across nearly 12,000 square feet, and a design that rambles around a center courtyard, the stucco home contains a lot of potential. It’s an ornate home, and many of the period details have survived remodels and revisions. Some modern elements have been incorporated, but the emphasis is still on old Hollywood embellishment.

From the carved double front doors, the house holds a few unique surprises. Perhaps most interesting is the open-trussed ceiling in the wood-clad dining room, inset with arabesque panels in a variety of designs. Inlaid oak floors, wall niches with stenciled borders, a master bedroom with a large marble fireplace accented with a carved wood mantel are other period curiosities. Hand-hewn beam ceilings, a mix of modern and period light fixtures, and arched portals also distinguish the interior.

The center courtyard is floored with terra-cotta tile, and features a traditional central fountain and arcade. The tiling extends to the pool/lounge area, and pergola-capped patio. The property incorporates a tennis court, as well.

Agnes Moorehead was a member of the Mercury Theatre long before her role in the 1960’s sitcom ‘Bewitched’. Her other films include 1944’s ‘Jane Eyre’, and 1957’s ‘Raintree County.’
