EV fledgling Lucid Motors unveiled its ‘Alpha Speed Car’—a prototype of its top-tier Air sedan—at the New York Auto Show this week. The upstart startup claims the Alpha hit 217MPH at the TRC test track outside Marysville, Ohio, but suggested the car was limited by its software, and will quite comfortably reach even higher speeds. The company is currently planning a test without software limitations.
The top Air model will feature 1,000 horsepower via two motors, front and rear; the design will allow the car to play the part of high-tuned racer and car-about-town. The car will feature a range of 400 miles.
The Air series will offer an entry level model, which the company says will be base priced at around $60K; the first in the Lucid lineup will offer drivers a range of 240 miles, and 400HP. 400 horsepower pales next to 1,000, of course, especially in a culture which routinely demands the biggest and baddest. But, placed in perspective, the considerable rating is about the equivalent of a 2017 Mercedes-AMG E43; and, being an EV, the $60K Air will probably scoot to 60 more quickly than an IC-equipped car with the same horsepower rating. And, the government will give you a tax break for going green so quickly.
Lucid is set to begin production in 2018, with deliveries slated to begin in 2019. The company is expecting to increase production dramatically in the first two years.
