Mercedes-AMG has revealed its 2018 GLC63 series in advance of the upcoming New York Auto Show; the crossover SUV—as well as the Coupe and sports Coupe S—is receiving an eight-cylinder twin turbo engine. It’s the same 4.0L V8 engine featured in the AMG GT vehicles, and it makes the GLC63 crossover SUV a very fast family car.
In the GLC63 lineup, the powerful engine will produce 469 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque in the SUV crossover and crossover-coupe models; the sportier S is tuned to produce 503 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, placing it squarely in upper-echelon sports-daily driver territory. The S will get to 60 in 3.7, although its siblings come in at only two-tenths under that mark; for the SUV crossover model, that’s fast enough to make the Macan uneasy.
The gearbox is a nine-speed paddle auto, and three driving modes control performance versus economy; the S features a ‘race’ mode as well. Variable-ratio steering, and an air-spring suspension with adaptive shocks are also included in the standard GLC63 outfit.
The fascia of the GLC63 is even more aggressive than the 2017 model; the cars now bear the pronounced snarl of the AMG GT series. Wide-body fenders, 20-inch wheels, big front aprons, and pronounced rear diffuser elements add a little track drama.
Sports seats are standard, as are AMG sport gauges; Nappa leather and high-performance seats are among the interior options.
The GLC63 line will be available in the U.S. early next year.
