Alan Ball’s Hollywood Hills home has seen a price reduction—to $7.95 million, from an initial listing price of $8.25 million. Mr. Ball waited until a year had elapsed before he made the reduction.

The reason for the sale may well be the acquisition by the writer of another Hollywood Hills house: the former home of singer and songwriter Sheryl Crow, which is situated on a little more than ten acres. Ball and his partner, actor Peter Macdissi, were involved in a well-publicized legal skirmish with neighbor Quentin Tarantino over their menagerie of tropical birds, leading them to look for a new nest. They listed this home about a year and a half later.

The house is a 1950’s Craftsman, and a really splendid example: distinctly Californian, it would look at home anywhere in the country. It measures about 6,000 square feet, and contains six bedrooms and six baths in a rambling layout. A Craftsman-style gate with stacked-stone pilasters marks the entrance to the property, and establishes the style, which is reinforced strongly throughout in lighting, ceiling design, and low-slung roofline. The earth-toned stain is effectively accented by window trim.

The property contains two additional structures, apart from the main residence: one contains a guest bedroom and bath, as well as a dance studio; the second contains a kitchen and an open living space. The lot—which measures a little over an acre—also contains a tasteful pool and spa.

Alan Ball—who took home an Oscar for his ‘American Beauty’ screenplay—created ‘Six Feet Under’ and ‘True Blood’; ‘Six Feet Under’ was one of the most acclaimed television series every produced. His most recent project is ‘The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,’ which will be broadcast by HBO next month. Ball was an executive producer on the film.
