McLaren Teases New Three-Seat Hypercar

McLaren’s BP23 concept was revealed by the automaker at the Geneva Motor Show. The three-seat rocket—according to the company—will be the fastest and most powerful production car in the company’s history. The hybrid powertrain will produce more than the 900-horsepower powertrain of the P1.

The BP23 is a grand tourer; it may borrow the three-seat capacity and center wheel of the F1, but it will be nearer to a luxury travel vehicle than an almost-track car. The lines of the car are extraordinarily fleet, even for a high-end GT. The rear diffuser, when engaged, is set at an incredibly acute angle, and the large wheels give it the look of a car that devours pavement.

The BP23’s engine will more than likely be the same 4.0L V8 in the 720S, coupled with an electric motor. Battery management software has been improved over the P1, and the battery is more powerful and lighter; plug-in charging is still not in the cards, but the BP23 will be able to operate as an EV-only for short distances. No word on EV-only range as of now, though.

McLaren Special Operations—the company’s customization design department—will offer a wide variety of exterior and interior options.

McLaren will limit production of the model to only 106 examples—the same production ceiling placed on the F1. And…no ragtop version, says McLaren.

Deliveries for the BP23 are set to commence in 2019; all 106 planned examples have already been pre-sold.
