Back in 2015, boutique California-based automotive company US Specialty Vehicles developed a sport utility vehicle dubbed the Rhino XT. Prices have gone up a little since the Rhino’s introduction, but it’s still a heck of a sport-utility, and worth a look.
Looks like a Hummer, you say? Well, it boasts design cues from the Hummer H1, but the Rhino XT is actually based off a custom Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. USSV has rendered the body much more aggressive with fiber-reinforced plastic body panels, flared fenders, tow hooks, and a heavy-duty roll cage. The fender flares are easily removed to transform the Rhino XT from an on-road vehicle to a rock-hopping, off-road warrior in mere minutes.
US Specialty Vehicles uses Toyo Open Country A/T tires, which provide a good balance between asphalt and bushwhacking functionality. The Toyos make for a quiet and comfortable ride on city streets, but provide excellent off-road traction.
A 3.6-liter V6 engine provides the Rhino XT with 285 horsepower; gearbox is a five-speed automatic. Sprintex superchargers are available as an upgrade option.
The interior boasts a premium sound and navigation system from Alpine, rear-view camera, a 3D digital instrument panel, and flashy red leather seats. Additionally, the Rhino XT comes with a removable hard top so its owner can enjoy open-air driving.
USSV’s Rhino XT kits start at around $80K.
