Filmmaker Penelope Spheeris—who directed the essential hard-rock documentary trilogy ‘The Decline of Western Civilization’—has put her home in Studio City up for rent. The director and producer is looking for $8,950 monthly for the mid-century modern home, which features a gated entrance, and views surveying the Valley and mountains.
The home measures about 3,650 square feet, and contains three bedrooms and 3.5 baths. With its muted tile or polished cement floors, abundant glass and lack of color, the home has a shimmering and somewhat transparent quality. A backlit concept ceiling in the step-down living room is a nice touch, the bedrooms are unpretentious, and the kitchen is bright and relaxed. It’s functional, but executed with a creative composition out of mid-century modern design: simple, utilitarian and uncluttered, and thoughful.
The property measures about three acres, a generous-sized lot for the neighborhood. It’s here that the home really shines. Footpaths meander through gardens around the perimeter of the house, and a large deck is nicely bordered by mature trees for privacy. There’s a small pool, and the detached pool house may serve as a guesthouse: it contains its own kitchen, and open concept living and bedroom space, as well as a bath renovated in marble tile.
Aside from the ‘Decline’ films, Penelope Spheeris directed the 1992 hit ‘Wayne’s World.’ She’s at her best exploring the transformational possibilities of music, and the relevance of associated subcultures.
